1370721 Electroslag remelting INSTITUT ELEKTROSVARKI IMENI EO PATONA AKADENII NAUK UKRAINSKOI SSR 17 March 1972 [17 March 1971] 12748/72 Heading B3F [Also in Division H5] A method of electroslag remelting of a plurality of consumable electrodes carried by a common electrode holder comprises melting the electrodes by immersion in a slag bath in a mould and supplying a cooling gas to the surface of any electrode insufficiently immersed in the slag. Any unbalance in the melting rates of the electrodes is detected by voltmeters connected across each of the electrodes and the ingot being built up. A rise in voltage indicates that the electrode concerned is immersed in the slag to a lesser depth than the other(s). The cooling gas, e.g. air, argon or an argon-oxygen mixture, is then supplied to the surface of this electrode so as to cool both it and the molten slag in its vicinity, and thus bring about a reduction in its melting rate until it is immersed in the slag to the required depth. Refining agents for the metal may be introduced into the gas flow.
