Abstract

1369949 Mandrels JUDELSHON INDUSTRIES Inc 14 Aug 1973 [4 Oct 1972] 38392/73 Heading B3B [Also in Division B4] A slitting machine 10 for slitting transversely a roll R of sheet material, e.g. fabric, into shorter lengths comprising a knife 18, a mandrel 16 for supporting the roll and including a chuck means 40 for rotating the roll, a hollow non-rotatable shaft 46 adapted to support the weight of the roll, the interior of the shaft being supplied with compressed air which passes through holes 76 in the upper surface of the shaft thereby providing an air bearing between the shaft and the inside surface of the roll. The chuck means 40 is operated by compressed air in order to grip the bore of a core 44 on which the sheet material is wound; the chuck includes a bearing 48 for supporting one end of the stationary shaft 46, the other end of the shaft being closed by a member 50. The member 50 is formed with a V-shaped end 58 for location in a frame support 24 and with an air passage 72, 74. The mandrel is rotated by a motor-and-gear unit 30 via a belt drive 32. The pressurized air also serves to cool the mandrel and flush away bits of material produced during cutting. The mandrel is provided with a flat 47, Fig. 4, which enables the blade to cut right through the roll.
