Abstract

1369096 Cutting tools DIAGRIT GRINDING CO Ltd 31 May 1973 [17 June 1972] 28451/72 Heading B3B A cutting tool comprises a holder 11 and a cutting insert 20, the insert being received in a pocket 14 in a plate portion 13 secured to the end of the holder, the insert being clamped in the pocket by a clamp 16 secured to the holder by screw 18 and located on the holder by way of a co-operating tongue and groove connection. The pocket 14 has two or more sides 22 the opposite facing edge portions of which correspond to opposite facing edge portions on the insert 20, the co-operating edge portions substantially preventing lateral movement of the insert in the pocket when secured by the clamp 16. In the embodiments described the cutting tool is in the form of a parting-off tool and the side faces of the insert are hollow ground to provide side clearance when the tool is in use and cutting faces 32 are formed by machining at a slight angle to the general planes containing the sides 22 to provide front clearance for the cutting edges 31. Means is also provided to conduct a supply of coolant to the cutting edges during operation of the tool, the means being in the form of conduits 36, 37 through the holder body and/or the clamp 16 which open into the region immediately adjacent the cutting edge to discharge coolant thereat. These alternative arrangements are indicated in Fig. 6 and Figs. 7-9 (not shown)
