Abstract

1368010 Coating with co-base alloys AIRCO Inc 27 Dec 1972 [27 Dec 1971] 59601/72 Heading C7F A substrate is coated by vapour deposition with a Co-base alloy containing at least one of Ni, Cu, Cr, Al, Y, Ti, or rare earth, the substrate surface being maintained at T> 1600‹F when one or more of Ni, Cu and Cr is present, and at T> 1700‹F when one or more of Al, Y, Ti or rare earth is present, the temperature in each case being below that at which epitaxial deposition will occur. The substrate may be a Ni-alloy turbine blade, which may be rotated, or a strip fed from reel-to-reel, and is heated by induction or resistance heating or by electron beam; the pressure may be <1 Torr, and the Cobased alloy is evaporated from a water-cooled Cu or stainless steel crucible by electron beam heating. The resulting coating is free from micro-cracks and columnar grains therethrough; it may be vacuum heat-treated, peened, and airannealed.
