Abstract
1367121 Rare earth iron garnet films ROCKWELL INTERNATIONAL CORP 21 Dec 1971 [28 Dec 1970] 59453/71 Headings C1A and C1J [Also in Division H3] A method of producing a bubble domaincontaining, film-substrate structure comprises the steps of depositing on a substrate a magnetic film of a single crystal material having a negative magneto-striction constant along a crystallographic axis-oriented approximately normal to the plane of the film, in which the magnetic film has a lattice constant which exceeds the lattice constant of the substrate by an amount at least equal to 0À035 at room temperature, and in which the coefficient of thermal expansion of the substrate is the same or lower than that of the film by an amount not more than 1 x 10<-6>/ C. The film may be deposited by chemical vapour deposition techniques. The film and substrate may both be garnets, e.g. Gd3Fe5O12 on Sm3Ga5O12 and Y3Ga1À2Fe3À8O12 on Y3Al5O12, Tb3Ga5O12 and Dy3Ga5O12, the orientations being (111) or (110). Other simple rare earth iron garnets are listed.
