Abstract

1365936 Curable composition ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd 2 Oct 1972 [1 Oct 1971] 45825/71 Headings C3B and C3R [Also in Division B5] A curable composition comprises (I) an aralkylene/phenol resin containing free phenolic OH groups and repeating units wherein a is 2 or 3, R<SP>1</SP> is a di- or tri-valent optionally substituted aromatic hydrocarbonoxy radical, in which the oxygen is present as an ether group, and ArOH is a phenolic compound (defined as any aromatic compound derived from benzene containing 1-3 phenolic OH radicals and at least two nuclear hydrogen atoms available for reaction), (II) a compound containing at least two epoxy groups per molecule, and (III) an amino compound containing two nitrogen atoms in the same heterocyclic ring, at least one of them is tertiary and the other secondary or tertiary. Curing may take place by heating I, II and III together, e.g. at 110-200‹ C., preferably followed by a post cure at at least 250‹ C. I may be prepared as described and claimed in Specification 1,150,203; such resins are sold commercially under the Registered Trade Mark "Xylok". II may be a cycloaliphatic epoxy resin, e.g. 2-(3,4-epoxycyclohexyl)-5,5- spiro(3,4 - epoxycyclohexane) - 1,3 - dioxane. Examples of III are N-n-butylimidazole and benzimidazole. Uses.-Impregnant for glass cloth laminates.
