1,182,377. Coated metal sheet. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 5 July, 1968 [6 July, 1967; 10 Aug., 1967; 19 Aug., 1967], No. 32131/68. Heading B2K. [Also in Divisions B5, C2 and C3] Coating compositions used in coating metal sheets comprise epoxy resins cured at 20- 300‹C with an aromatic polyamine of general formula: R(OCOArNHR<SP>1</SP>) n in which R is a radical formed by elimination of the hydroxyl groups of polyhydric aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or araliphatic alcohols; Ar represents an optionally substituted phenylene or naphthylene radical; R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or an alkyl radical and n is an integer from 2-10. Preferred compounds have the formula: in which R<SP>2</SP> is the radical formed by elimination of hydroxyl groups form: (A) a C 2-10 dihydric to tetrahydric alcohol whose hydrocarbon chains may be interrupted by one or more O atoms or by a cyclohexane ring, (B) a C 6-15 dihydric cycloaliphatic alcohol, or (C) a dihydric to decahydric araliphatic alcohol; n is 2 to 10. The NH 2 groups are preferably meta or para to the carboxylic ester group. In an example a diglycidyl ether of 1,4-butane diol (epoxide equivalent 150, 100 grams) is mixed with 91 g. of bis(m-aminobenzoate) of bis-hydroxyethyl bisphenol A and dissolved in a 1:1:1 mixture of butyl acetate, toluene and ethylene glycol monomethyl thio acetate to give a 50% solids mixture. This is poured onto an iron plate which is stored for 30 minutes at room temperature and cured 24 hours at 120‹C to give a smooth, firmly adhering and highly elastic coating.
