Abstract
136,584. Hughes, C. M. C., and Hill- Jones, Ltd., T. Aug. 17, 1918. Composition fuel.-Coal or coke, in a finely subdivided state, and pitch, with or without other materials, are mixed with water to form a plastic mass, which is moulded to form fuel briquettes; the mixing is effected cold or at a temperature below the melting-point of the binder. The briquettes are subjected to the action of an increasing temperature, which at first is sufficient to drive off the water from the briquettes but not sufficient to melt the binder, and later is high enough to melt the binder. On completion of the heating process, the briquettes are allowed to cool and harden. The composition of the briquettes by weight may be as follows : 90 parts of fine coal, 6 parts of pitch, and 4 parts of filter-cake from sugar refineries, or 80¢ parts of coke dust, 12¢ parts of pitch, 5 parts of filter-cake, and 2 parts of iron oxide; or 92¢ parts anthracite duff, 5 parts pitch, and 2¢ parts filter-cake. Lime may also be added to the mixture.
