Abstract

1365573 Internal-combustion engine turning gear CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 13 Oct 1972 [13 Oct 1971] 47439/72 Heading F1K [ Also in Division H2] Internal-combustion engine turning gear comprises an electrically, operable starter motor 13 having a pinion gear 18 engageable with a further gear 22 arranged in use to crank the internal-combustion engine, means 24 actuatable by an electric current to urge the pinion gear into a position corresponding to meshing engagement of the pinion gear and the further gear and an electrically operable switching device including an electric time delay circuit 54, the arrangement being such that when the apparatus is connected to a source of electrical energy 47 and is in use the switching device operates to periodically deactuate and reactuate the means thereby moving the pinion gear towards and away from the position until the pinion gear is in the meshing position the pinion gear being intermittently turned to avoid repeated butt engagements of the pinion gear and the further gear. The solenoid assembly 28 is energized to commence operation of the starter motor assembly 12 upon closing of power failure sensing relay contacts 56. When the engine is operating and oil pressure rises a piston 51 is retracted to open a switch 48 and thereby open the starter motor circuit. In an operation controlled system the switch 48 is not essential. Other switching devices could be used for example transistors.
