Abstract
1364782 Fragmentation casing DIEHL 8 June 1972 [12 June 1971] 26706/72 Heading F3A [Also in Division B3] A method of producing a fragmentation casing for warheads &c. comprises the steps placing a first tube 6 (Fig. 2) into a snugly fitting mould, inserting within it a second tube 8 of twice the wall thickness, introducing a fragmentation filling 7, e.g. spheres or cylinders, in the space between the tubes and applying a pressure from within the second tube to deform the tube sides around the filling (Fig. 3). The first tube 6 may be made of high-strength aluminium or steel, the spheres 7 of ceramic material, tungsten carbide or ferro-titanium, and the second tube of metal. The deformation may be induced by explosion or the driving of a mandrel.
