Abstract

1364638 Rotary positive - displacement machines F JEANDEL 16 Dec 1971 [16 Dec 1970 29 Nov 1971] 58459/71 Heading F1F In a worm and worm-wheel type I.C. engine the rotor 2 has a helicoidal rib 8 extending on to outer parts 27, 28 that embrace an annular inner stator 1, which is linked with an outer housing 1' by a bridge connection 29 and carries two toothed wheels 4 that mesh with said rib, a portion of the latter being cut away to accommodate an annular projection 14 spanning at least one tooth of each wheel. Air or a combustible mixture is inducted by a centrifugal impeller 13 and compressed in chambers a to f before entering a combustion chamber 17 through channels 15 and openings 19, 20. A fuel-injection nozzle 34 may be formed in a stud 21. The combustion products expand in chambers g to r and the exhaust gases drive a turbine rotor 31. A further projection 23 may be formed on the stator to effect smooth expansion. The stator may contain water cooling tubes 54, the water being circulated by pumps 55 driven by the toothed wheels, and additional combustion chambers 60, 61 may feed extra combustion products to the chambers n to q, Figs. 9 to 11 (not shown). The engine may be modified to work as a steam driven compressor, Figs. 13, 16 and 22 (not shown) steam driven pump, Fig. 18 (not shown) a refrigerant compressor, Fig. 17 (not shown) a steam engine, Figs. 19 and 20 (not shown) or a compressor, Fig. 21 (not shown). Another embodiment, Figs. 23 to 33, has two rotors on a common shaft and a common air-cooled stator, each rotor and the portion of the stator associated therewith being generally similar to the stator and rotor, respectively, of the embodiment shown, and the machine serving as a simple or compound compressor.
