Abstract

1363875 Puffins tobacco ROTHMANS INTERNATIONAL Ltd 29 Nov 1972 [6 Dec 1971] 56441/71 Heading A2C The moisture content of tobacco or tobacco products, especially cut rolled tobcaco stem material, is increased to more than 30%, preferably at least 40%, by treatment with water or wet steam, and the moistened material is passed through a high frequency electric field to reduce its moisture content to less than 25%, in order to puff the tobacco. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, cut rolled tobacco stem is fed via a metering tube 2, a short band conveyer 3 and a vibratory conveyer 4 onto a band conveyer 5 to form a layer 6. Hot water is sprayed onto the tobacco material by jets 8, 9 as shown. The tobacco layer 6 is then passed through a dielectric oven 11 under a lightweight pervious sheet of flameproof material 12. Hot air is forced into the oven compartment 13 to raise the dew point and expel water vapour. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, the tobacco material is delivered by four vibratory conveyers 23, each having an angle discharge 24, onto the band conveyer 25 of a dielectric oven 27 to form a tobacco carpet consisting of four layers each of which is separately sprayed with hot water by jets 26. In a further embodiment, Figs. 6-8 (not shown), the tobacco material is sprayed with wet steam as it is being fed down a steam jacketed vertical tube of rectangular crosssection onto a band conveyer.
