Abstract

1363471 Tapping pipes A J WOODIN 12 Aug 1971 37991/71 Heading F2G A ferrule 10, Fig. 1, has an annular groove 12 receiving the upper radially-extruding flange 28 of a resilient seal 27 which is initially cupshaped with its lower end closed by a frangible integral diaphragm 30, a helically-wound garter spring 29 being moulded into the seal, pushing the ferrule and seal into a hole in a pipe 31 until lugs 15 on the ferrule abut the seal flange 28 rupturing the seal diaphragm and forcing the ferrule through the seal, partial withdrawal of the ferrule to the position shown in Fig. 2 then allowing the lower end of the seal containing the garter spring 29 to lodge in the ferrule groove 12. The seal 27 contracts into grooves 13 around the ferrule. A one-way valve 17 permitting egress of fluid from the pipe 31 to a branch 16 can be locked in the closed position by tightening a threaded plug 26. Reference is made to Specification 1,139,435.
