Abstract

1362657 Coated sheet material TBA INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS Ltd 3 Nov 1971 [20 Nov 1970] 55368/70 Heading B2E A process for producing a long length of composite sheet material comprising a metal core coated on both sides with a fibre-reinforced elastomeric material, wherein the coatings are applied to both sides of the metal core simultaneously by drawing the core through a nip between two rotating calender rolls by means of a tensioning device acting downstream of the calender rolls, the core being drawn at a speed equal to the surface speed of the calender rolls, feeding an uncured dough-like composition of fibre-reinforced elastomer to both sides of the core as it passes through the nip, the feeding and viscosity of the composition being controlled so that the coatings are spread evenly over both sides of the core and subsequently curing the coatings. Preferably the coated metal core is passed through an oven before being engaged by the tensioning device. After drying the core is preferably passed through a further nip to consolidate the coatings. The dough-like composition may contain a solvent system including a volatile solvent for the elastomer and an non- solvent liquid. Suitable liquids are toluene and water respectively and preferably the ratio of toluene to water is greater than 4 to 1 and less than 10 to 1 by volume. The metal core may be a wire gauze or a perforated sheet or a plain or embossed sheet metal. Preferably the core is coated with an adhesive before the composition is applied. The adhesive may contain a curable adhesive material in solution in a solvent and is applied as a film of thickness 5 microns. The adhesive is preferably partly soluble in the solvent system of the dough-like composition. A suitable adhesive is nitrile rubber and a phenolic resin in the solution of a polar solvent such as ethyl acetate. The fibrereinforced coating may be of unequal thicknesses on the two sides of the metal core.
