Abstract
1361745 Gas producers BITUMINOUS COAL RESEARCH Inc 1 March 1972 [22 Sept 1971] 9589/72 Heading C5E A process for gasifying coal comprises contacting the coal in one zone 14 with superheated steam and with a synthesis gas comprising H 2 and oxides of carbon to produce a CH 4 - and H 2 -containing gas and entrained char, the char being separated from the gas at 20 and divided into two portions, of which one is withdrawn and burnt to produce energy, e.g. in a boiler 30, and the other is recycled to a second zone 12 for gasifying with superheated steam and O 2 to produce the synthesis gas which is delivered to the zone 14. Both zones are operated at pressures of at least 60 atmos, temperatures of at least 1600‹ F., and with residence times of less than 10 seconds in the zone 14 and less than 2 seconds in the zone 12. In the zone 12 a temperature in excess of 2500‹ F. may be employed. In a modification, see Fig. 2 (not shown) the char withdrawn is desulphurized in a fluidized bed supplied with recycled gas from the separator 20.
