Abstract
1360747 Casting processes GENERAL MOTORS CORP 9 Nov 1972 [15 Feb 1972] 51671/72 Heading B3F A columnar-grained unidirectionally solidified cast alloy article (e.g. a turbine blade) is made by pouring a molten alloy into a ceramic mould having an open-ended cavity, allowing the alloy partially or wholly to solidify, reheating the mould and the alloy to a temperature above the melting range of the alloy and allowing the mould to cool with the open end of the mould cavity in contact with a chill plate. When casting turbine blades a shell-mould 10 is provided with a branched runner system 16 leading to several blade-forming cavities 12 (each having an open end 13) from a sprue 14. The mould 10 is located in a tapered flask 20 (having an asbestos layer 23) upon a heat-insulated support 13. The mould having been preheated to, e.g. 2000 F., the mould/flask assembly is located in a vacuum chamber (not shown) and molten alloy, e.g. at 2900 F. poured into the mould. The alloy is allowed to solidify, at least in the open ends 13 of the cavities 12 and removed from the vacuum chamber on to a chill-plate 18. Pebbles 23 of exothermic composition, e.g. burning at 3100 F. are packed around the mould and ignited to remelt the alloy. Due to the tapering shape of the flask 20 a temperature gradient is set up in the mould and the alloy cools from the base upwardly to form columnar-grained unidirectionally solidified castings. An air-tight hood 30 may cover the mould whilst the metal solidifies and hexamethylenetetra-amine may be placed in the sprue 14 to evaporate and form a reducing atmosphere. Inert gas, e.g. Ar can be introduced into the hood 30. In order to form a turbine blade where the root has an equiaxed structure and the airfoil part has a columnar grained structure only that part of the cast alloy forming the airfoil is remelted.
