Abstract
1359789 Thermionic cathode constructions PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 30 June 1972 [3 July 1971] 30778/72 Heading H1D A method of forming a superficially dark insulating coating on a heater wire for an indirectly heated cathode comprises electrophoretically depositing a first binder (e.g. PVA) and a first metal oxide (Al 2 O 3 ) on the wire; applying a suspension containing a dark material (W powder), a second metal oxide (Al 2 O 3 ), a solution of a second different binder (polymethacrylate in petroleum spirit), a solvent for the first binder (xylene) and a substance (petroleum spirit) which mitigates attack of the first binder by the solvent; and heating the wire to sinter the two layers, the suspension containing only sufficient solvent for the first binder to promote adhesion between the layers. The oxides may be Al 2 O 3 , ThO 2 , ZrO 2 , MgO or BeO. Sintering takes place at 1600‹ C. in H 2 -N 2 atmosphere.
