Abstract

1358216 Passivation of zinc INSTITUT KHIMII I KHIMICHESKOI TEKHNOLOGH AKADEMII NAUK LITOVSKOI SSR 16 Aug 1972 [5 Oct 1971] 38184/72 Heading C7U A composition for passivating zinc comprises, in parts by weight, (A) at least one trivalent Cr compound, 5 to 20, calculated as Cr (B) at least one hexavalent Cr compound, 0À1 to 2À0, as Cr (C) at least one nitrate, 10-25, as NO 3 - and (D) at least one B compound, 1À8-6, as B. Suitable compounds are: (A) Cr 2 (SO 4 ) 3 .6H 2 O; K 2 Cr 2 (SO 4 ) 4 .2H 2 O; Cr 2 (SO 4 ) 3 .6H 2 O plus K 2 Cr 2 (SO 4 ) 4 .24H 2 O; Cr(NO 3 ) 3 .9H 2 O; or Cr(NO 3 ) 3 .9H 2 O plus Cr 2 (SO 4 ) 3 .6H 2 O (B) CrO 3 and/or chromates and/or dichromates of NH 4 , Be, K, Cd, Li, Mg, Na and/or Zn (C) nitrates of NH 4 , Be, K, Cd, Li, Mg, Na and/or Zn and (D) orthoboric acid, Mg orthoborate, polyborates of NH 4 , Be, K, Li, Mg and/or Na. The composition may be dissolved in water to give a trivalent Cr content of 3-6 g/l and a pH of 2À1 Œ 0À3 (adjusted with H 2 SO 4 ) and zinc articles are passivated by dipping or spraying at 15-35‹C for 10-20 seconds.
