Abstract

1357817 Fibre-forming polymer mixtures TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc 23 Sept 1971 [25 Sept 1970 (2)] 44505/71 Headings C3G and C3P [Also in Division D2] A paper-forming pulp comprises cut and beaten fibres of a polymer composition comprising (a) a fibre-forming hydrophobic polymer as a matrix component and (b) a dispersed component comprising a block or graft copolymer having a hydrophobic segment, preferably identical to (a), and a hydrophilic segment bonded thereto. Typical components (a) and hydrophobic components of (b) are acrylonitrile polymers, olefin polymers, polyesters and polyamides. Typical hydrophilic portions in (b) are vinyl alcohol, acrylic acid and acrylamide polymers, cellulose, starch, polyalkylene glycols, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, and polystyrene sulphonic acid. Hydrophilic homopolymers (c) may also be included. The pulp is suitable for forming into a fibrous, bonded structure to provide a synthetic paper. In examples, (a) is polyacrylonitrile, acrylonitrile-methylacrylatesodium allyl sulphonate (optional) copolymer, acrylonitrile - vinylidene chloride copolymer, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene-terephthalate, or nylon, and (b) is acrylonitrile grafted on polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylamide or polyacrylic acid, a block copolymer obtained by copolymerizing acrylonitrile with acrylic anhydride and hydrolysing the product, a block copolymer obtained by irradiating acrylonitrile in dimethyl-sulphoxide containing bromoform to form a bromine terminated polymer and adding acrylic acid followed by ultraviolet radiation, a saponified ethylene-vinylacetate graft copolymer, a saponified vinyl acetate grafted polypropylene, acrylic acid grafted nylon and acrylamide grafted polyethylene terephthalate, and in some cases (c) is polyvinyl alcohol.
