Abstract
1357390 I C engine cylinder heads REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT and AUTOMOBILES PEUGEOT 21 Sept 1971 [23 Sept 1970] 44046/71 Heading F1B A cylinder head 3 defining a part-spherical combustion chamber 4 has an inlet passage 5 which approaches the chamber substantially parallel to the cylinder abutment face of the head and which is curved towards the abutment face to lead into the chamber obliquely to the abutment face. A spark-plug duct 9 is inclined to the abutment face in a direction opposite to that of the passage 5 and forms an obtuse angle with the axis of the inlet valve 7. In use, fuel particles in the passage 5 are concentrated towards that wall of the passage on the outside of the curve and are then deflected by the valve 7 to be preferentially directed into the duct 9. The spark-plug 10 may have electrodes (10b), Fig. 2 (not shown), located in a pre-combustion chamber (13) forming an extension of a duct (9a) located in a boss (11) projecting into the combustion chamber. The duct 9 may have a diameter between 5À5 and 6 mm. and a length of about 4 mm. The volume of the duct 9 or of the duct and pre-combustion chamber (9a, 13), Fig. 2, (not shown) is preferably between 4 and 6%, with a minimum of 3%, of the total combustion chamber volume.
