Abstract

1356860 Fermentation apparatus CREUSOTLOIRE 9 July 1971 [30 July 1970] 32338/71 Heading C6F [Also in Division B1] Batch or continuous discharge apparatus for aerating and circulating liquids comprises a parallelepipedal vessel 1 having vertical baffles 2 round which the liquid flows under the action of gas injected in the lower part of the vessel, there being curved guides 7 beneath the baffles which are shaped at top and bottom as at 8, 9. There may be additional guide vanes 10, 16. Gas is supplied to chambers 12 between the guides 7 and injected by diffusers 11 comprising perforated tubes or porous candles, or through orifices (17) Fig. 3, (not shown) in the walls of the chambers 12. The baffles 2 may have coolant channels see Figs. 4 and 5, (not shown). Any foam formed may be destroyed by flat or curved blade wheels mounted above the baffles 2, see Figs. 6 and 7, (not shown) and rotated by the flow of liquid. The apparatus may be used for the manufacture of proteins by culture of micro-organisms which feed on the paraffin factions of petroleum.
