Abstract
1356636 Mixing apparatus; autoclave for polymerisation UNION CARBIDE CORP 26 July 1971 [27 July 1970] 34984/71 Headings B1C and B1X Apparatus for mixing liquids has a vessel 10 of circular cross-section and a rotatable helical ribbon agitator 18 having at least one discontinuity 26 with a fixed, baffle 28 in the region: thereof The baffle may have angled protrusions 32, serve as a sensing means, or incorporate additional inlets or outlets. The agitation may have two or more starts, and be of stream-lined: cross-section to reduce cavitation. Counter-clockwise rotation (as seen from above in Fig. 1) produces axially downward flow and a vortex surface 36, and is preferred for mixing, while discharge is promoted by clockwise rotation which gives downward flow 40, axially upward flow 42, and a curved liquid surface 34. Volatiles are vented at 12. Preferred proportions and dimensions are given; the apparatus may be used batchwise or continuously. It may be embodied as an autoclave reactor for making phenolic, polystyrene, epoxy or acrylic resins. More than one such apparatus may be used in series, see Fig. 3 (not shown).
