Abstract
1355599 Reactors HOCHTEMPERATURKERNKRAFTWERK GmbH (HKG) 21 July 1972 [21 July 1971] 34315/72 Heading G6C A nuclear reactor comprises a reaction vessel having a charge of spherical fuel elements which are circulated during operation, there being at least two groups of spherical fuel elements with the elements in each group being of the same diameter but the groups of elements being of different diameters from each other. The fuel elements are uniformly mixed together with the different diameters selected such that the circulation of the elements does not cause substantial segregation of the groups. Where the charge comprises two groups, these may for example comprise elements having respective diameters of 58 and 61 mm. The provision of such groups prevents the fuel elements from adopting an arrangement corresponding to the densest possible packing, in which each element is in contact with twelve neighbouring elements, so that when the control rods are advanced into the charge the stresses applied to the elements and to the tips of the rods are considerably reduced. Fracturing of the fuel elements, particularly at the greater depths of penetration of the control rods, is thereby prevented.
