Abstract
1355082 Valves for pressurized dispensing containers PITTWAY CORP [trading as SEAQUIST VALVE CO] 19 April 1971 [16 Feb 1970] 24613/71 Heading F1R [Also in Division F2] The spring-loaded outlet valve member 16, Fig. 13, of a pressurized dispenser has an annular lip with a V-shaped annular depression 141 therein which divides the upper surface of the lip into two sealing surfaces co-operating with a valve sealing gasket 20. As shown, the valve stem 14 has a base plug 145 which opens the valve when the stem is depressed or tilted. The member 16 has flow grooves 149 and is identically shaped at each end so as to be reversible. Many embodiments are described having features such as (1) swirl chambers Figs. 14, 15, (not shown) with tangential channels in the top surface of the valve member or in the stem base; (2) restrictions at the bottom, top or middle of the valve stem bore Figs. 9, 16, 17, (not shown) or swirl inducing vanes therein; (3) restriction of stem tilting to one direction by the use of a shaped depending skirt on a valve stem actuating button Fig. 18, (not shown) the use of an elongated orifice in the member in which the gasket 20 locates Fig. 20, (not shown), the valve stem having flattened sides to engage the sides of the orifice and prevent the valve stem from turning, or by the use of a valve stem actuating button having a depending lug to substantially prevent such turning Fig. 22, (not shown); (4) variation of spray rate by valve stem rotation, a base flange 222, Fig. 24, of the valve stem having a periphery which is either a spiral or a series of circular arcs of different radii so that by co-action with a radial slot 230 in the valve member 16 continuous or discrete flow variation is obtained; (5) a drain chamber in the valve member and an upstanding central post thereon with filter grooves Figs. 30, 31, (not shown). In Fig. 1 the valve stem base 54 is a closed cone with flow ports 62 and co-acts with a conical cavity 48 of greater taper in the valve member 16 and having at its base a cylindrical cavity 50. The member 16 may be a loose fit in the valve body cavity 32 or a sliding fit therein, when there are flow grooves in one or other or both of the elements 16, 32. There may be a radial step Figs. 4 to 6, (not shown) between the parts 48, 50, on which the apex of the valve stem base 54 may lodge when the stem 14 is tilted, so as to prop the valve open until the stem is manually restored to upright. A similar lock-open action may be obtained with a cylindrical valve stem base flange Fig. 6A, (not shown). To provide metered dispensing Fig. 7A, (not shown) the valve member 16 may have an internally coned rim co-acting with an externally coned projection on the inner floor of the valve body cavity so as to provide a second valve which closes when the outlet valve is opened and vice versa. A valve stem base flange of lobed configuration Figs. 10, 12, (not shown) with a radial port therethrough may be used, the stem having a hemispherical closed end. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1212724.
