Abstract
1353469 1,2-Dichloro propane IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 28 June 1971 [23 Sept 1970] 45288/70 Heading C2C 1,2-Dichloropropane is recovered from the byproduct stream from a process for preparing propylene oxide by conversion of propylene chlorohydrin, said stream containing 1,2-dichloropropane, propylene chlorohydrin, hydrochloric acid, water, chloroacetone and heavy ends, by (a) distillation to give an overhead fraction of 1,2 - dichloropropane, propylene chlorohydrin, hydrochloric acid and water, (b) condensation of the overhead stream in a mixer and treatment with alkali to convert the propylene chlorohydrin to propylene oxide and neutralize the hydrochloric acid, (c) phase separation, (d) recycling part of the 1,2-dichloropropane phase to the distillation step (a) and (e) distillation of remaining 1,2-dichloropropane phase to obtain purified 1,2-dichloropropane as the bottoms stream. The overhead stream from step (e), containing water and propylene oxide, may be condensed and recycled to the alkali treatment step (b), condensation being preferably effected in the same condenser as is used for the overhead stream from step (a).
