Abstract
1,204,181. Separating propylene and propylene oxide. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 22 Dec., 1967 [4 Jan., 1967], No. 576/67. Heading B1L. Propylene oxide is recovered from mixtures thereof with propylene by preferentially absorbing the propylene oxide in propylene glycol, or in a liquid ester or ether thereof, and subsequently recovering the propylene oxide from the liquid phase. Thus, propylene, air and acetaldehyde are passed by lines 11, 12, and 13 respectively to reactor 1, from which there leaves a gas stream 15 comprising 1% propylene oxide and 58 % propylene, and a liquid stream 16 comprising 13.5% propylene, 1% propylene oxide and 76% propylene glycol and derivatives thereof which are also formed in the reaction. The gas stream passes to condenser 2 where a liquid stream 22 comprising an aqueous solution containing inter alia 1.5% propylene oxide is recovered and distilled to yield propylene oxide. The gas stream 21 passes to scrubber 3 where it is contacted in countercurrent with reaction products which boil above 140‹C. The bottoms pass with the liquid stream 16 to still 5 where propylene is distilled off at 23, leaving propylene oxide to be recovered in known manner from bottoms 24. Overhead from scrubber 3 passes to similar scrubber 4 operated at high pressure e.g. at 75 atmos and at 20‹C., waste gas being vented at 20 and propylene recycled by 19.
