Abstract

1350915 Beds for preventing bed sores KOH CHUAN SENG 3 Aug 1971 [6 Aug 1970] 38018/70 Heading A4J A bed for preventing bed sores forming on invalids comprises a rectangular bed frame 2 supported on a base frame 1 for continuous or intermittent rotation about a horizontal axis 3, a patient support 5 of flexible sheet material being attached to the bed frame. Rotation of the bed frame is effected by an electric motor 7 connected to a screw 8 mounting a nut 9 slidably connected through a pin and slot connection to the lower end of an arm 6 rigid with the bed frame. The motor may be hydraulic or pneumatic. Switches 12 which define the limits of rotation of the bed frame by causing the motor to be reversed are provided on the screw 8. If the driving means are disengaged for manual rotation of the bed frame, the bed frame may be fixed in any desired position by fastening means provided between an arcuate metal plate (16) Fig. 1 (not shown) mounted on the base frame and a rigid arm (15) Fig. 2 (not shown) of similar construction to arm 6 but on the side of the bed frame opposite to arm 6. In an alternative embodiment, two adjacent parallel screws 8 are arranged to rotate in opposite senses, the nut 9 being replaced by a block incorporating two threaded members in engagement with the screws which are alternately lockable against rotation. In a further embodiment a single screw is provided at each end with an electric motor, the motors being arranged to rotate the screw in opposite directions and being alternately switched on and off by limit switches 12. Alternatively the arm 6 may be coupled to a crank mounted on a wheel arranged to be driven continuously by an electric motor, causing the bed frame to move to and fro.
