Abstract

1350171 Power tongs BYRON JACKSON Inc 16 March 1972 [16 April 1971] 12260/72 Heading B3N A power pipe tong comprises a housing H, a rotatably supported pipe gripping means G, including jaws J, carried by a rotatable inner ring 10, and actuable between retracted and pipe gripping positions in response to rotation of an outer rotative cam ring 11, by drive means including one or more drive chains 12, a fluid pressure operated, rotary, chain driving, spinning motor 17, and, depending on whether the tong is being used to make up or break out pipe joints, break out actuator cylinder means BO and make up actuator cylinder means MU, each of which operatively engages a portion or run of the chains 12 between the motor M and the outer ring 11, whereby extension of the respective cylinder will apply a pull to the chain and effect angular movement of the ring 11 in one direction of the other while motor M or its chain drive shaft 7 is locked by lock means L. During relative rotation between members 10 and 11, member 10 is held stationary by brake units 153. The units are connected to the housing and are hydraulically operated to grip a disc 150 attached to member 10. To ensure that the jaws are fully retracted when necessary and followers 40 are in the dwell positions of the cam surface reverse stop means RS is provided. This consists of a stop member 170 in the form of a ring concentrically mounted upon a support flange 171 which is secured to ring 10, and a companion stop member 174 on ring 11. Stop ring 170 is biased upwardly by springs 176 but can be moved downwardly by fixed cams 183 co-operating the movable cams 185.
