Abstract

1349437 Portable electric drills ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 23 Nov 1972 [24 Nov 1971] 54231/72 Heading B3C [Also in Division B4] A two-speed rotary-percussive hand drill comprises an electric motor 6 for rotating first and second gear-wheels 31, 23 at different speeds, and an externally operable adjusting member 38 for selectively axially moving the tool spindle 17 into engagement with one or the other of the gear-wheels and into a position where notches 25 on one of the gear-wheels co-operate with notches 24 on a fixed part of the drill to cause the percussive action. The two gear-wheels 31, 23 are driven simultaneously at different speeds from a pinion 22, the gear-wheel 23 being driven directly and the gear-wheel 31 being driven through gears 21 and 34. The adjusting member 38 as shown consists of a disc which can be rotated on a shaft 37 into four positions located by a ball catch 44, the stepped surface 38<SP>1</SP> being arranged to push the tool spindle into its forward first position where a pin 28 on the spindle engages in a slot 32 in the gear-wheel 31 to be driven thereby at "slow speed". In the second position of the tool spindle, the pin is moved into a recess between the two gear-wheels so as not to be engaged by any gear-wheel. In the third position, the pin engages in a slot 26 in the gear-wheel 23 to be driven thereby at "fast speed" and in the fourth position the pin pushes the gear-wheel 23 up against the notches 24 to effect rotary and percussive drilling. The adjusting member 38 may be linearly slidable instead of rotary. The tool spindle may be urged rearwardly by a spring (17g or 17h) Figs. 5 or 6 (not shown) and the end 17<SP>1</SP> of the tool spindle may be provided with a ball bearing or hardened pin. When no spring is provided the tool spindle 17 may be pushed rearwardly against the selected step on the surface 381 by the pressure of work. The gear-wheels and bearings may be made of sintered metal.
