Abstract

1348871 Marine outboard motors OUTBOARD MARINE CORP 8 Feb 1972 [7 April 1971] 5683/72 Heading B7V Sound emission from a motor drive shaft housing 19 is inhibited by a shell 41 which is resiliently mounted on the housing and which contains water. Water may be introduced by a pump 78 or by an engine coolant pipe 77 and overflows through a shell opening 78 or through an opening 81 into the drive shaft housing to leave the latter, along with exhaust gases, through the propeller 29 or through a hollow fin 31. In an alternative arrangement (not shown), the space 47 between the casing and the housing may form part of a closed engine cooling circuit. Noise emission from the engine 15 is reduced by a shroud 43 which is resiliently connected to the shell 41 and to the engine 15. The motor mounting includes a bracket 51 whose arms are resiliently connected to parts of the housing 19 which project through openings in the shell 41, Fig. 2 (not shown). Resilient members seal the shell openings. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the engine shroud is structurally integral with the shell, and the motor is mounted only by connections to the drive shaft housing.
