Abstract

134,822. Riebe-Kugellager-und Werk- zeugfabrik Ges. Nov. 7, 1918, [Conven- tion date]. Testing physiological functions.-In order to test a workman's capacity for working a milling- machine, he is set to turn a screw against an in- creasing pressure to a predetermined extent. The parts are then brought back to their original posi- tion and he is required again to turn the screw an amount equal to that of the first test. The screw, which is hollow, is seen at 9, working in a nut 3. It is driven by the crank-handle 1, the spindle 2 of which passes through the screw and can be clutched to it by the clutch 10. The nut 3 is prevented from turning by the bar 5, which slides through the standard 14, and operates a pointer 6 moving over a scale 7. A helical spring 4 surrounds the screw 9 and fits between the nut 3 and standard 14. As the screw advances, it compresses the spring, and the corresponding pressure is shown on the scale 7. After the nut has been advanced to a predetermined extent, the clutch 10 is opened, and the parts brought back to zero. The clutch having been once more put into action, the examinee is required to bring the parts into the position of the first test. In order to prevent the first test from being any guide in the second, the nut may be adjustable independently of the crank, or the abutment against which the spring 4 bears may be adjust- able, so that the initial tension of the spring is different; or the setting of the crank may be altered in other ways than by a clutch.
