Abstract

1346899 Bonded yarn IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 5 May 1971 [20 May 1970] 24421/70 Heading D1W A yarn comprises a parallel array of staple fibres consisting of at least a proportion of potentially adhesive fibres, the adhesive fibres being bonded to contacting fibres such that the bonded yarn has an average stripping force of at least 1.0 gm., a tenacity of at least 0.5 gm/dtex and a yarn stiffness of less than 0.005. Stripping force is defined as the force required to remove a single fibre from the bonded yarn when the fibre is pulled at a rate of 5 cm./min. Yarn stiffness is defined in terms of the max. horizontal diameter of a specimen yarn loop, when supporting a weight of 0.05 gm, and the linear density in Tex. The yarn preferably has a stiffness of less than 0.003, and an average stripping force of at least 3.0 gm. The discontinuous fibres may consist wholly of potentially adhesive fibres, or of a mixture of non-adhesive fibres and potentially adhesive homofibres or composite fibres. The mixture preferably consists of 5 to 25 p.b.w. of potentially adhesive fibres. The non- adhesive fibres may comprise polyethylene terephthalate, polyhexamethylene adipamide or polyacrylonitrile fibres, or natural fibres, or a mixture of fibres. The adhesive homofibres may be of polyeposilon caprolactom or polypropylene fibres. Among the suitable adhesive composite fibres specified are polyepsilon cap -rolactom/polyhexamethylene adipamide fibres. In the yarn making process, a sliver of fibres is false twisted in a fluid vortex, and the potentially adhesive fibres are subsequently activated to bond them to contacting fibres. The vortex may be supplied with fluid at a temperature of from 90‹C to 260‹C inclusive. The potentially adhesive fibres may be activated by heat or by chemical treatment, and may be activated intermittently along their length.
