Abstract
1346652 Measuring railway track parameters F PLASSER 2 July 1971 [2 July 1970] 31045/71 Heading G1N In a self-propelled machine for determining joint position, vertical irregularities and condition of the track bed of a railway track, relative vertical movement between a load-bearing main wheel 2<SP>1</SP> resiliently supporting the machine's undercarriage 3 and a track-feeling wheel or wheel assembly 6<SP>11</SP> is transmitted to an electrical transducer by two toggle levers 14, 21 having the same lever arm ratio, each toggle lever being pivotal in a plane normal to the plane of the track. The unloaded vertical profile of a rail and its bending under load can be measured, without error due to relative movement or vibration of the undercarriage 3 with respect to the load bearing wheel 2<SP>1</SP>. Two transducers are provided for measuring respective rails. In Fig.3, the transducer is a variable inductance displacement transducer having two coils (25, Fig.5, not shown) in a stainless steel housing 19 connected to the toggle lever 14 and an armature (20) connected to the toggle lever 21. The coils (25) are connected with two resistors to form a bridge circuit, which is energised with stabilised alternating voltage and connected via an amplifier to an indicator and recorder or computer. In Fig.7, one arm of the toggle lever 14 is formed by a hardened spring steel leaf spring 29 carrying four wire resistance strain gauges 28 cemented near the leaf root. The other end of the leaf spring carries a fork engaging, through a ball-andsocket joint 33, a stud 32 on the end of the other toggle lever 21. The toggle lever 14 pivots about a ball-and-socket joints 18, fixed to the undercarriage 3 vertically below the pivot 22 of the other toggle lever. The strain gauges are connected to form a bridge circuit (Fig.9, not shown) which is energised with stabilised alternating voltage and connected via an amplifier and filter to an indicator and recorder or computer. The electric signals may be used to control automatic track levelling equipment. The machine may also include means for measuring versine, twist and gauge. The feeler wheels are hydraulically retractable from the rails during non-measuring transit.
