Abstract

1345353 Injection moulding foamed plastics articles HIROSHIMA KASEI Ltd 24 May 1971 [24 April 1971] 16550/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division C3] In a method of producing a foamed, fibre reinforced plastics article comprising central closed cell layer, two open cell layers disposed one on each side of the closed cell layer, and two unfoamed skin layers, a melt formed from a blend of (a) a thermoplastic resin and (b) fibres of 1-60 mm. long having a blowing agent bonded thereto is injected into a mould having a non- expandable cavity and cooled to solidify it. The thermoplastic resin may be polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, vinyl chloride/ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers, acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene copolymers, or ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers. The fibres may be natural or synthetic, e.g. leaf, silk, animal hair, cellulosic, or synthetic resin, and a binding agent may be used to form the mixture of fibres and blowing agent (which may itself be a mixture). The moulded article may be a shoe sole.
