1344160 Filter presses KURITA MACHINERY MFG CO Ltd 21 Dec 1971 59312/71 Heading BID Liquid containing solid particles in suspension is supplied by a duct and inlets 18 to each of the chambers 19 of a filter press comprising recessed plates 1 which alternate with composite plates 2; the liquid pases through fabric sheets 8 and 14 into passages 7 and 11 formed by protrusions 1c on plates 1 (Fig. 2) and protrusions 10c on stretchable airtight sheets 10 (e.g. of rubber) which cover the core-plates 2a of plates 2. The filtrate flows down passages 7 and 11 to channels 9 and 12 in plates 1 and 2 respectively, and then flows to discharge channels 13 (Fig. 3). When it is required to squeeze residual liquid from the filter cakes in chambers 19, fluid is passed through channels 16 into chambers 17 in core-plates 2a, whereby sheets 10 are inflated towards the adjacent chambers 19 except in the region of channels 12. When the liquid is discharged from the cake; the pressure fluid is discharged from chambers 17. Cylinder 23 is operated to retract movable end-plate 6, and plates 1, 2 are moved one after another to permit the cake to drop from between the plates. During the squeezing operation, a varying pressure may be imparted to the pressure-fluid to enhance the squeezing effect and prevent clogging of the fabric. Pressure-fluid may be supplied to chambers 17 with varying pressure during the primary filtration to impart vibration to the suspension being filtered. Wash liquor supply channels 21 (not shown) and 22 are provided in plates 1 and 2 respectively. These channels 21 and 22 have openings behind the sheets 8 and 14 of filter fabric, so that the fabric can be washed when necessary. In a modified press (Fig. 7, not shown), the plates are hung on arms, and the filter fabric is passed over pulleys on the arms.
