Abstract

1343235 Feeding sheets INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 21 April 1972 [21 May 1971] 18557/72 Heading B8R Sheets are separated from the top of a pile 62, Fig. 3, by a suction roller 26, Figs. 3 and 4, having a foam covering 38, the roller and covering having aligned suction apertures. The roller is rotated by a motor through a pulley 50 and a belt 52 when a clutch 48 is closed. The roller is also movable about the axis of the shaft 46 carrying the pulley 50 by means of arms 24. When the roller contacts the top sheet 60, thus reducing the surface open to atmosphere, the reduced pressure in conduits 22 closes the clutch 48 and also causes a bellows 16 to collapse. The bellows is secured to a fixed flange 14 and to a flange 20 secured to the roller support, thus raising the roller when it collapses, until the flange abuts a stop 56. Leaf springs 58 cushion the engagement of the roller with the pile, and assist it to accelerate as it rises. The roller is thus not rotating when it engages a sheet, and is rotated and raised simultaneously as a result of engaging the sheet, which is thus raised and forwarded through curved guides to feed rollers, the springs 58 at this time having a stiffening effect.
