Abstract
1342519 Refrigerator cabinets WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 5 July 1971 [31 Aug 1970] 31457/71 Heading F4H A heat-insulated cabinet, e.g. for a refrigerator comprises an outer shell 18, 20, open at one side and an inner liner nested in the outer shell to provide a space to be filled with foamed thermal insulation, the liner 26 and the outer shell 18 being joined along edge portions at the open side, the joint being sealed by a gas-pervious seal 50 which allows air to escape from the space when it is being filled with foam, but which prevents escape of the foam. The outer shell is constructed of a single U- shaped member 18 forming the top and sides, and an L-shaped plate 20 forming the back and bottom. The edges of the member 18 are bent to provide a channel receiving the flanged edge of plate 20. Flange 30 of plate 18 has a piece 32 folded back to provide the bottom 38 and the opposite wall 42 of the channel. The channel is filled with an impervious seal 48 which is compressed by the flange 52 of the plate 20 during assembly. The other edge of the member 18 is formed with a similar channel to receive the cranked edge 54, 56 of the inner liner. The seal 50 is a pervious material, e.g. open-celled polyurethane foam or glass fibre, which is only slightly compressed by the edge of the liner. During the foaming operation the cabinet is turned so that the open side is uppermost, and the foam is introduced through holes in the back plate 20. As the foam fills the cavity, air escapes through the pervious seal. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,233,807.
