Abstract
1335620 Making steel bar or rod, improving molecular structure BOHLER & CO AG Gebr 15 Oct 1971 [15 Oct 1970] 47998/71 Headings B3A and B3V In a process of making forged or rolled steel bar or rod from a ledeburitic tool steel, a cast electrode of the steel is remelted and poured into a liquid-cooled ingot mould to form a slab, the slab is upset in a succession of forging steps along a long axis and is then elongated transversely to this long axis by forging or rolling. The slabs are made by an electro-slag process which gives fine grain and freedom from shrinkage cavities and segregation. The slab is forged to a square or circular cross-section and the semi-finished product is elongated to a circular or other cross-section. The cross-sectional area of the semi-finished product is at least twice that of the finished bar or rod, which has a homogeneous carbide distribution throughout its cross-section and length.
