Abstract

1334388 Treating I. C. engine charge; purifying exhaust gases SUN OIL CO 17 Dec 1970 [29 Jan 1970] 59898/70 Heading F1B To reduce the emission of oxides of nitrogen from a motor vehicle engine the mixture produced by the fuel supply system, e.g. a four-barrel carburetter 7, is, during off-idle and low-flow main metering operating conditions, enriched as compared with the mixture which would be produced by a carburetter set to the manufacturer's recommended settings for the conditions. Above a predetermined engine or vehicle speed, e.g. 35 m.p.h., additional air is fed to the engine intake. The exhaust gases from the engine are acted on to convert at least part of the CO and HC therein to harmless substances, e.g. by flow through afterburning reactors 4, 4'. The additional air is fed into a carburetter bore 7 through a port 10 or ports upstream of the throttle valve 8 or to the bore of a plate immediately downstream of the carburetter. The air inlet pipe 11 contains a valve 12 closed by a solenoid 19 and a calibrated restriction 13 or an adjustable needle valve. The solenoid 19 is deenergized and the valve 12 opened when the normally-closed switch 18 is opened by a signal from the electrical tachometer-type unit 15. The signal operating the relay 17 may be supplied by the unit 15 when the number of ignition pulses received corresponds to the predetermined engine speed or the number of pulses supplied by a device associated with the vehicle transmission corresponds to the predetermined vehicle speed. The solenoid 19 may be controlled by a mechanically-operated switch responsive to automatic transmission pressure or r.p.m. Air may be fed to the exhaust gases immediately downstream of each engine exhaust valve by an engine-driven pump.
