Abstract

1333710 Adhesives containing hydrophobic release agents IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 10 Nov 1970 [17 Nov 1969 1 July 1970 7 Sept 1970] 56090/69 31877/70 and 42762/70 Headings C3F and C3U An adhesive composition comprises a wateractivatable adhesive which is a cellulose derivative, starch or a derivative of starch, and particles of a hydrophobic material which is a natural or synthetic wax as defined below, or a Group II or Group III metal salt of a fatty acid having 14-22 carbon atoms, the ratio of parts by weight of hydrophobic material to parts by weight of water-activatable adhesive being either (1) 20 : 80 to 80 : 20 when the hydrophobic material is a natural or synthetic wax or (2) 20 : 100 to 100 : 20 when the hydrophobic material is a Group II or Group III metal salt of a fatty acid having 14 to 22 carbon atoms. The synthetic wax may be a fatty alcohol or acid, fatty acid ester or glyceride, e.g. polyethylene glycol stearate, hydrogenated oils or polyethylene. The composition may be prepared as a two component composition, one component comprising an aqueous dispersion of the hydrophobic material, the second component comprising particles of the wateractivatable adhesive. The preferred hydrophobic material is aluminium, magnesium or calcium stearate. The composition may be applied to wall coverings, floor coverings, posters or labels.
