Abstract

1332463 Hydropneumatic shock absorbers RHEINMETAL GmbH 7 Dec 1970 [24 Dec 1969] 58095/70 Heading F2S [Also in Division F3] A gun is provided with a hydropneumatic barrel recuperator 3 which comprises a cylinder 7 connected to the cradle of the gun and a piston and piston rod assembly 6, 4 working therein, and connected to the barrel of the gun. The piston rod 4 is of hollow construction, is closed at its outer end and has mounted therein a floating piston 17, a gaseous medium being provided between the floating piston 17 and the closed end of the rod. The annular space 16 formed between the piston rod 4 and the inner wall of the cylinder 7 is filled with an hydraulic fluid which communicates through the piston with hydraulic fluid within the piston rod and impinges on the face of the floating piston remote from the gaseous medium. The piston of the recuperator comprises a one-way valve and throttling bores 23. An hydraulically actuated barrel moving device 24 is also provided and comprises a piston and cylinder arrangement 26, 25 the piston rod 28 of the piston 26 being operatively connected to the barrel of the gun for urging the barrel into its retracted travelling position. The hydraulic chambers of the recuperator 3 and device 24 are connected through a two-way valve 31, a closure valve 30, 35 and a pump, hydraulic fluid being pumped from the hydraulic chamber of the recuperator 3 to the hydraulic chamber of the device to urge the barrel of the gun into its travelling position. The recuperator may be provided with an hydraulic fluid level indicator in the form of a spray loaded piston 12.
