Abstract
1,209,575. Piston-cylinder shock absorbers. A. A. DE KONING, and K. K. K. DE KONING. 27 March, 1969 [18 April, 1968], No. 16223/69. Heading F2S. In a shock absorber of the kind in which a piston 2 has one or more through passages 6, 8 and a surrounding cylinder 1 has one or more passages 13, 15 communicating with an external reservoir 12, an auxiliary annular piston 20 surrounds the rod 3 of the main piston 2. The auxiliary piston can be moved along the pistonrod by an external source of fluid pressure. The function of the auxiliary piston is to lock the shock absorber in an inoperative state: moving the piston 20 inwardly (i.e. downwardly in the drawing) will push the main piston 2 to the bottom of the cylinder and hold it there. The external fluid pressure source for moving the piston 20 may be connectible at 34 to the hollow piston-rod which communicates via a tube 29, a passage 28, a tube 25 and a passage 24 with the space 23 above the piston 20. Alternatively the piston-rod may be solid and the inlet for the external fluid source will then be either in the passage 28 or in the passage 24, in which case the tube 29 and/or the tube 25 would be omitted.
