Abstract

133,159. Bury, E., Ollander, O., and Bury, A. F. Oct. 4, 1918. Carbon.-Peat-coke prepared by distilling airdried peat at a temperature of 700-900‹ C., is used for the absorption of gases and vapours, such as ethylene, benzene, propylene, toluene, xylene, sulphuretted hydrogen, carbon bisulphide, and organic sulphur compounds from the products of distillation of organic material. The absorbed products may be separated by fractional distillation or otherwise. The peat-coke is placed in vessels, preferably combined with scrubbers, and the gases passed over it at approximately normal pressure and temperature. When the peat-coke has been used for some time it is removed through air-tight mains into a heating vessel for the removal of the gases or vapours. The residual peatcoke is cooled out of contact with the atmosphere and returned to the absorption chamber for further use.
