Abstract

1328759 Cams; reciprocating pumps and motors ROLLER GEAR Ltd 23 April 1971 [23 April 1970] 11008/71 Heading F1A [Also in Division F2] In a hydraulic pump, or motor, having non- rotatable annular pistons 27-30 reciprocable in annular cylinders 17-20 of a fixed housing 11, each piston is formed with an annular multi-lobed cam surface 52 or 54 engaged by sets of equi-spaced balls 56 or 58 arranged in carriers 60 freely mounted at each side of the piston/cylinder assembly on an output shaft 40 to which are keyed, at 71, driving discs 70 formed with ball tracks 76, 78, the arrangement being such that rotary drive from the input shaft 40 and discs 70 causes planetary motion of the sets of balls 56, 58 which, via the cam surfaces 52, 54 reciprocates the annular pistons 27-30 to pump fluid via inlet and outlet valves 21, 22 and ports 12, 13 respectively. The angular construction of the ball tracks 76, 78 on the driving discs 70, Fig. 5, are mathematically evolved in terms of the cam lobe angles, Fig. 4, whereby the track rolling radii for the balls 56, 58 are selected such that the rolling movement of the two sets of balls 56, 58 in each common retainer will be equalized so that the balls roll smoothly without slip thereby avoiding the potentially adverse effect of the different circumferential lengths of the cams 52, 54. The balls may be replaced by stepped rollers, Figs.7 and 8 (not shown) running on modified grooved tracks (90) in the driving discs 70.
