Abstract
1328486 Axial flow hydraulic pumps and turbines ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO Ltd 3 May 1972 [4 Feb 1971] 3970/71 Heading FIT F1C [Also in Division H2] An axial flow hydraulic turbine, pump or pump/ turbine having the rotor of an electrical generator or motor secured to the tips of runner vanes 20 includes feeding means for one or more rotor services connected between the rotor and a non-rotatable portion of the machine via hub 18. In one arrangement cooling water is supplied through a pipe 70 disposed in fixed stub shaft 10 and flows through duct 63 in a structure 36 supported by spider 82 so as to rotate with hub 18. The cooling water thence flows through pipes (not shown) to a chamber 66, Fig. 3 (not shown) at the base of one of the tie rods 68 extending through runner vanes 20. Rods 68 are hollow so that the water can flow therethrough and thence around the rotor windings 24, Fig. 1 (not shown) before returning through another rod 68 and chamber (66), duct 67 and a further pipe 70. Face seals 72 are provided between the ends of pipes 70 and ducts 63, 67 to prevent cooling water leakage during rotation. Excitation current is also supplied to the windings (24) via slip rings 74 and insulated copper conductors disposed in axial grooves in tube 60 and connected to leads passing through rods 68. The vanes 20 may be angularly adjustable, in which case an axially slidable valve 46, Fig. 2 (not shown) may be disposed within structure 36 to control oil distribution to a piston and cylinder pitch change mechanism (26, 28) contained within hub 18. A thrower (76) may be provided on tube 60 to prevent any water leaking past seals 72 from contacting slip rings 74. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1290134, 1265151
