Abstract

983,643. Cooling dynamo-electric machines. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. Feb. 2, 1962 [Feb. 9, 1961], No. 4140/62. Heading H2A. A submersible electric motor comprises a casing housing the stator and the rotor, a chamber within the casing, a filling of cooling and lubricating fluid in the chamber, means for circulating the fluid through the motor and means for directing the fluid to a channel between the outer periphery of the rotor shaft and the rotor. A cooling and lubricating system for a submersible motor, Figs. 3a, 3b, 3c, is driven by a centrifugal impeller 27, Fig. 6. The outlet 29 of the impeller feeds oil into passage 30 in bearing housing 31 and into space 32 formed between casing wall 11 and a heat-resisting laminated plastic tube 35, the space 32 acting as a heat-exchanger. The oil enters chamber 36 via ports 38 and then passes through filter 50 to be pumped up axial channel 40 in shaft 19. The major part of the oil leaves via radical passages 42 and enters chamber 41 where it flows down bearing 47 and by-pass passages 43, 44 to be recirculated by the impeller. The remainder of the oil proceeds up the channel 40 to lubricate intermediate bearing 23, Fig. 3b, by radial passages 51, the bushing guide 58 by radial passages 57, Fig. 3a, and the thrust race bearing 22 by radial passages 65, the channel continuing up shaft to expansion chamber 83. The return flow is via passages 76, 77 into chamber 63 and down the rotor gap 82 and also via two additional longitudinal grooves 80, 81 in shaft 19, the grooves extending the length of the rotor 18 and opening into chamber 41, Fig. 3c. The power supply connection for the motor (Figs. 2 and 4, not shown), is of the conventional gland type. Specification 983,642 is referred to.
