Abstract

1325390 Comminuting photographic emulsions AGFA-GEVAERT AG 8 Oct 1971 [10 Oct 1970] 46943/71 Heading B2A Apparatus for continuously melting solidified photographic emulsions comprising a comminuting apparatus, a measuring arrangement, a fluidizing chamber and a separator. The comminuting apparatus comprises a vertical pipe section 2 which is open at its top end and closed at its bottom end. The pipe has openings 3 in its wall surface and is surrounded by an evacuator chamber 4. Thus the granules are forced through the holes and comminuted. The measuring arrangement adjusts the quantity of the supplied emulsion granules and comprises a vertically adjustable core 11 the diameter of which is slightly less than the internal diameter of the pipe section 2. The fluidizing chamber 5, which in use is under vacuum and melts the granules discharged from the openings in the pipe comprises a cylindrical vessel having nozzle slits 13 in its wall to permit steam to flow through tangentially. The separator 6 is connected to the bottom end of the fluidizing chamber. The rate of feed of emulsion via the core 11 is controlled in response to temperature in the molten emulsion discharge pipe 15 and the steam pressure is monitored in the steam outlet pipe 8 from the separator and used to control a valve 10 which regulates the steam vacuum in the fluidizing chamber 5 and separator 6. The melted emulsion is delivered from the apparatus by a pump 7.
