Abstract

1325250 Expansion joints RHEINSTAHL AG 22 Dec 1971 [26 Jan 1971] 59828/71 Heading E1B Longitudinal strips in an expansion joint between a road 2 and a bridge deck 3 are supported by at least two longitudinally spaced lazy tongs devices 9, each device comprising at least two lazy tongs units 14 having upper 11 and lower 12 intermediate pivotal connections, the pivot pins of upper connections 11 passing through holes in projections beneath the strips 8. The upper end connections 10 are securely pivotally attached to edge strips 4, which are fixedly secured to edge supports 15 for concreting to the road or bridge, and the lower end connections 21 are secured in vertical slots in plates 22 welded to the supports 15. In an alternative the lower end supports 21 are omitted the arms 29 then 'terminating at the intermediate connections 20. The strips 8 are prevented from tilting by steel flats 17 passing through slots beneath at least three adjacent strips (only one flat is shown). Tilting may also be prevented by lateral or downwards forked projections from the bottom of the strip embracing the bottom of an adjacent strip and receiving its pivot pin 11 in horizontal slots or receiving its own lower pivot pin 12 in vertical slots. Elastomeric sealing strips may be secured between adjacent strips 8 and between the strips 8 and the edge strips 4. Further modifications of the lazy tongs devices are described.
