Abstract
1323541 Charging storage batteries H OKANO 12 Jan 1971 [16 Jan 1970] 1511/71 Heading H2H A charger for a battery comprises a transformer 3 and a rectifier 2, the output 6, 7 of which is taken to terminals 10, 11 for connection to a battery, a second rectifier 8 in series with a relay 9 being connected across the terminals, the rectifier being adapted to operate a switch 9a in the primary circuit 14 of the transformer 3. In use, in the event of connections 10, 11 being correctly applied to the battery terminals, the residual voltage of the battery prior to a charging operation causes a current to flow through the relay 8 to operate switch 9a and commence a charging operation. In the event of the battery poles being incorrectly applied at 10, 11, no current is drawn through the relay 9 and no charging operation takes place. Upon removal of terminals 10, 11 from a battery, the pulsed current through the relay 9 is insufficient to keep the switch 9a in a closed position. A second relay operated switch may be placed in an output lead of the rectifier 2, and the rectifier 8, relay 9 combination may be replaced by a relay adapted to close the contacts in the event of current flow in one single direction.
