Abstract
855,935. Discharging batteries; protective arrangements. SVENSKA ACKUMULATOR AKTIEBOLAGET JUNGNER. Dec. 27, 1957, No. 40220/57. Class 38 (4). In order to prevent the destruction of one or more of a number of series connected battery cells by the excess gas pressure generated should the cell or cells begin charging with reversed polarity due to the cell or cells becoming fully discharged before the remainder when the battery is discharging there is. provided means to short-circuit the cell or cells when the gas pressure in the cell or cells rises above a certain limit or when the polarity reverses. An hermetically sealed cell 1 which forms part of a battery of such cells series connected, is normally charged from a source 7, 8 over a polarized relay 15, the armature 16 being unattracted during charging. When the battery is discharging the current direction through the operating winding 17 of the relay 15 is such as to cause attraction of the armature 16 so that the contact 13 moves into the vicinity of a contact 11 responsive to the gas pressure in the cell 1. Should the cell now become discharged before the remainder of the cells in the battery the cell 1 will tend to charge with reverse polarity thereby creating a large evolution of gas within the hermetically sealed casing such that when the pressure reaches a predetermined value the contact 11 will be moved into contact with the contact 13 thereby shortcircuiting the cell 1 preventing damage thereof. In another embodiment the polarized relay 15 is provided with two windings in a mutually aiding sense, one of which windings is responsive to the terminal voltage of the cell and is serially connected with a half-wave rectifier to make itsoperation current direction responsive.
